Attractions Near The Station

Some of the Sports Facilities near Dore & Totley station

Abbeydale_SportsAbbeydale Sports Centre is about 0.3 miles from the station on the opposite side of Abbeydale Road South towards Totley.  It has some excellent facilities and Yorkshire CCC used to play some of there county games on the cricket pitch.

A range of sports facilities are available including cricket, rugby, archery, racket ball, table tennis, bowls, badminton, squash, hockey and a gym.

Sheffield Round Walk is a 14 mile circular walk which passes the station and goes through many of the parks and woods in the south and west of Sheffield. Near to the station the walk passes through:-

  • Ecclesall Woods
  • Ladies Spring Wood (also known as Totley Wood

Ecclesall_Woods_2Ecclesall Woods is a large 350 acre wood with 15 kilometres of paths and bridleways, for walking and riding through the woods. It is owned and managed by Sheffield City Council and has a shop, cafe and Discovery Centre.  One of the many entrances is across the road from the end of the station Park and Ride. Friends of Ecclesall Woods have a website which describe the facilities and activities which are available within the Woods.

Ladies Spring Wood is a 38 acre woodland.  The Beauchief Environmental Group list some of the things to do within the woods.

High_Peak_Hope_Valley_Community_Rail_Partnership_2Dore and Totley station is a excellent place to catch the Hope Valley train.

Hope Valley and High Peak Community Rail Partnership list a number of events and activities which start at various stations on the line. These include:-

  • Folk Train
  • Station To Station Guided Walks
  • Many Self Guided Walks including Grindleford to D&T via Padley Gorge, Longshaw Lodge, Little John’s Well
  • Why not take the train to Grindleford and follow the route back.  Approx 6.6 miles.

Cycling

Sheffield City Council have a map in PDF format of the cycle routes in and around the city. Sections of National Cycle Network(NCN) routes 6, 67 and 627 pass through the city.  The nearest to Dore and Totley station is at Fulwood Lane just off Ringinglow Road (near the Norfolk Arms).  See the various routes at Cycle Routes.

Abbeydale_Industrial_Hamlet_300Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a eighteenth century industrial works. You can see how people lived at home and at work at a rural scythe and steelworks of the period.

The industrial hamlet is a short 0.4 mile walk down Abbeydale Road South towards Sheffield.

 

Eccles_Woods_Miniture_RailwayAbbeydale Miniature Railway is popular with the children (and their parents)  The track is run by Sheffield & District Society of Model and experimental engineers. There layout is in Ecclesall Woods across the road from the end of the station Park and Ride.  Several weekends a year they have scheduled public running days, see the web site for the dates and further details.
